I moved to New York City on the hot night of September 8th.
With two suitcases, two carry-ons, and a backpack I headed to my grandma’s place in Brighton beach – with the help of my lovely Ukrainian uncle.
On the drive from JFK to Brighton Beach my uncle showed me different neighborhoods, pointed at the beautiful Manhattan skyline and told me which bridge was what.

I had just graduated from my M.A. in London a few weeks ago and my next challenge was to build a brand new life in New York. I’ve been to New York plenty of times as a kid but it’s been at least a good 10 years since I’ve been back.

I talk about some major moving tips to NYC here but in this post I wanted to briefly summarize my experience so far.

Let’s go…

  1. New York is Tough
New York is a beautiful beast that will pull, push and mold you into your best self.

  2. The job market is extremely difficult
Be ready to work harder than you’ve ever worked before. Stay positive, be open to opportunities, network and show your best self. If you can make it here you can truly make it anywhere.

  3. You will meet incredible people
The people I’ve met so far are incredible accomplished superheros that inspire me to be better everyday.

  4. At first you’ll hate the city
When I first came here I did not understand what the hype was about New York. It’s dirty, crazy and you are truly all by yourself trying it figure out. It’s a mess when you first get here.

  5. Then you’ll love it
It took a few months but by January I was sold. New York is unique just like it’s citizens. The city has this spell of helping you discover more about yourself and what you really want in life. Life in NYC is vibrant, exciting and comforting.gab1
  6. Queens is a gem of a borough
I talk all about that here.

  7. There’s always something to do in NYC but staying home works perfectly too.
There is always something to do in NYC. New York has something for everyone.
I’m gonna tell you guys a little secret of mine. I use Club Free Time to go to free events all over the city. All you need to do is register to be a member. Thanks to this website I’ve been to performances and concerts that would have costed me $50 and up for NOTHING.

  8. Just because New Yorkers rush doesn’t mean you have to.
New Yorkers rush and run everywhere they go. Coming from London where everyone takes their time at cafes and pubs – I enjoy my lunch break in peace. I go take my coffee breaks calmly. Just because I live in NYC it doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to breathe.

  9. Pizza is life
Pizza life is serious here and I would have never guessed it. I grew up in Italy where you’d think that’s where the pizza party is but noooooo. New York is obsessed with pizza.

  10. No one gives two ducks
No one gives two shiitake mushrooms about you. So, focus on yourself and you’ll do great!
